Below, is the interview I conducted between the Computer History Museum and myself. Here are some of the answers a curator wrote responding to my questions.
1.Are there any books you feel I should read or people I should contact? If so, please list them below.
"Well, the best book on Steve Jobs is the wonderful Walter Isaacson book that came out last year. It's a hard read, but it's very thorough and it very much captured the Steve Jobs that I remember. If you can get through to him, Steve Wozniak is also worth asking questions of. He's at [email protected] and typically he tries to respond and is always willing to help out students.
Apple has changed the way technology is viewed at least three times over the course of its existence. The first was with the introduction of the Apple ][ computer in 1977. This was the introduction of computers for children, as Apple introduced the computer by giving hundreds of thousands of them to schools around the world. This led to a generation of people growing up with Apples as there computer of choice. Then there was the introduction of The Macintosh computer That changed computers forever by introducing the Graphical User Interface as the standard for human-computer interaction. Then, with the introduction of the iPhone, they once again changed technology by showing that people wanted to have a computer that they could carry with them that had all their files, their music, etc.. There had been handheld devices before, but the iPhone proved that it was a viable market segment.
I have mixed feeling[s about Apple]. I enjoy the Mac OS, like the hardware, but I also consider them well over-priced, and find that they're a company that's now turned their focus away from computers and young users, which I find unfortunate.
It is a company that sees trends early and shapes the way that consumers view technology. I think they will continue focusing on products such as tablets, smart phones and media players, and will likely enter more deeply into the entertainment products market."
5. Do you think Apple has changed since Steve Jobs has passed away?
"It has, though not as greatly as many have feared. Apple seems to be more focused on product lines that Jobs started, or had on-deck, and simply doing incremental changes to them. It still has to be seen if they can go in new directions, but I am betting eventually we will see new directions from Apple, and my guess is that will go into the entertainment products division.
Hope that helps
Chris"
